LIE VS. TRUTH

A lie by any other name remains a lie. Deception. Falsification. Prevarication. Invention. Misrepresentation. All these and other impressive variance of the same reality still say one and the same thing: Lie. Perhaps – just perhaps – it might help those present in the Senate hearings and the general public witnessing the proceedings, to better understand what has been really going on there for some time when the so called “Resource Persons” as put to task by answering direct and clear questions addressed to them – either by telling lies or invoking this or that right. Incidentally, there is no right to lie.

The very first thing that comes to mind and begs for understanding is that lying is a hard option a difficult recourse – precisely when the liar knows the truth not only sublime human reason but also base human instinct inherent to the persons concerned, go against the nature and intent of lying. Reason: Lie disturbs the liar just as truth pacifies him or her. In other words, when someone lies, the same subject agent in fact counters his or her own personal knowledge, attempts to deaden his or her own conscience. All these bring neither peace and/or pride, nor joy or fun to the liar.

Then there is the signal and relevant injunction that liars better have good memory –under pain of eventual self-contradiction in the course of time. In other words, telling lies and knowing the truth is a fatal pairing. This is why liars are said to have selective amnesia which is not only offensive to mental health but also destructive of honor and dignity. Thus it is that lying is not just difficult but also self-demeaning whereas it is self-contradicting.

Furthermore, there is the revealing facial expression, the betraying body language and pursuant deportment of a liar. For one reason or another, while someone is decided to lie, his or her other features however betray the him or her. This is because lying is that even chronic liars are eventually fallen by their own lies. The truth is that even the so called “white lies” are a discomfort to their “innocent” agents.

The over-all lesson in the phenomenon of telling lies contrary to known truths is basically one: Pitiful liars! No, this is not meant to leave them alone, much less to overlook the truth. It merely says that in the last analysis, liars victimize their own selves by exposing themselves to ridicule and in effect inviting pursuant sanctions. So goes the time and again proven affirmation: “The truth shall set you free”. Thus is it that liars are chained by their own perpetrated deceit, are brought to bondage by own choice to lie. Hence: Pitiful liars!

AMNESIA

In plain language, Amnesia is a well noticeable disturbance of memory usually due to a direct physiological effect of a particular medical condition – if not on account of the persisting effects of drug abuse. Professional psychiatry commonly holds that there are at least three criteria to conclude for the presence of Amnesia or now called “Amnesia Disorder” – it is: One, impairment in the ability recall of previously known facts and/or informational data. Two, impairment in occupational functioning among other acta and gesta. Three, impairment in memory ability that goes beyond the usual duration of substance abuse or medication. While little knowledge is dangerous, for non-expert in psychiatry it is enough to look into a diagnostic manual of mental disorders to know the above information.

One thing appears certain: Amnesia appears to be the sickness of the times. There are indications that more and more individuals will be thus disabled. Come to think of it, it seems to be a affecting a good number of no less than rather high ranking Officials in the Armed Forces of the Philippines – together with their close friends and aides. This phenomenon seems to be well verified in the relatively long on-going televised hearings instanced by the Senate Committee concerned “in aid of legislation” – and also as an advisory or a help to the Executive Department to eventually know what to do, whom to call and what cases to file.

Another thing seems definite: The Amnesia now making the rounds is rather selective in nature and extent. That is to say: The memory disorder appears well limited to matters of cash and kind. Why does one have so much? Where did it come from? How come the justice system seems dysfunctional in these apparently monumental graft and corrupt practices? Yet there is something that persists in memory, viz., and the invocation of the right against self-incrimination.

No, all the above are in no way meant to accuse anybody, to judge someone, much less to condemn this or that individual precisely suffering from selective Amnesia. This memory incapacity is a personal liability. And strictly speaking therefore, those afflicted by it should be subjects of compassion and objects of understanding. Nevertheless, there is something that should be said by way of a caveat: Hopefully, the recall disorder would be but temporary and would be forever gone – once the truth is all out. It can be said that a memory disorder is usually cured when those who are thus afflicted, recover from their indisposition and once again begin to remember when shocked with solid evidentiary facts.

Perhaps, those watching the individuals suffering from amnestic disorder might find them amusing. The reality however is that they deserve compassion.

"Beggars cannot be choosers"

Sad but true. Those who simply beg are in no position to dictate what they want or do not. They are wherefore at the mercy of those who have something to give, who want to give away something - for various reasons: The givers have too much of what they have, and will be happy to get rid of their unwanted surplus. The givers have something they have no real need of, and will be pleased to give it away specially to those who beg for it. The givers are giving something to get something else in return such that they are not really givers but takers in-fact.

Such is the persisting problem of poor Philippines that other Countries look down upon as a persistent beggar. The misery of the Filipinos is what precisely makes the said Countries haughty in their abundance, triumphant for their resources, depreciative of Philippine sovereignty. On the other hand, there is the Philippine government that has long since betrayed the legitimate pride of the skilled and competent, industrious and dedicated Filipino workers. The base reality and naked truth is that their own government has become dependent on remittances from the Filipino working class abroad to keep the Philippines economically afloat.

And there is precisely the over-all pitiful picture of the now world known overseas Filipino worker (OFW): They are ready and willing to go whenever and whenever in the globe to find jobs anywhere, anyhow. They are likewise ready and willing to face the presence of all kinds of danger, even the possibility of foreign slavery of one kind or another. They are even ready and willing to leave their families paradoxically in order to take care of their standing needs and prepare for their future – with particular concern for their children and elders.

More. In the middle East where OFMs are employed by the thousands, and where they are presently in fatal danger on account of the violent unrests in the Countries concerned, the following living realities are worth taking into serious account: One, there is the Philippine government that leaves no stone unturned to send Filipino workers abroad fast and easy in view of their precious remittances. Two, there is the same Philippine government that is slow and reluctant in bringing them back home for their safety and peace of mind. Three, there are the spouses and children who are deeply worried about the life and limbs of OFW, and who are disappointed and disgusted with the foot-dragging of exactly the same Philippine government.

This is not to mention the other thousands of OFWs here and there in Asia where they are looked down upon although they work well and hard. Reason: The Philippine government again!
