NO TO “WANG-WANG”! YES TO “PAGCOR”?

It is quite evident that the no to “Wang-Wang” official declaration made in the presidential inaugural address was and continues to be a big hit. It has been the prevailing talk in Metro Manila. It still gets into print in all newspapers, as well as talked about in many radio stations and furthermore covered by all major television stations. Of course, it bears watching how long and how far the public authorities concerned are disposed and willing to take the decisive order. For a change, it would be a big surprise as well as a great achievement if the now ardent and fervent anti-Wang-Wang mood and drive would really last till such nerve wracking invention were eventually all out and permanently off for good. It is not a secret that this Country is rather well known for the “Ningas Kugon” mentality and disposition of its leaders and most of their followers.

What is quite surprising as well as disturbing is that while the “Wang-Wang” was made a key point in the said distinct national event, nothing and absolutely nothing – not even but a little hint – that something significant has to be done to the infamous and covetous Philippine Amusement and Gamming Corporation. In fact, apparently to assure its sustained and continuous operation, the officials gambling arm of the government even received the silent but decisive presidential attention specifically in terms of the recent appointment of no less than its new Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer – proudly “Atenean”!

What could be his “Marching Order”?

It is to make official gambling in this impoverished Country more entrenched and pervasive, more operational and profitable? It is to make more gambling addicts, to destroy more Filipino families? It is to propagate more dishonesty and corruption, more fraud and graft in the disposition of the multi-million pesos taken away from its likewise dubious clients?

Or it is to canvass the assets specially in kind of all its notorious casinos in the chosen sections of the Philippines? It is to eventually sell them to well meaning and able individuals and corporations in order to conduct therein their preferred legitimate business or honorable ventures? It is to use the multi-billion peso sales realized there from to add to the national budget for agricultural development, for educational purposes and other immediate national needs?

Frankly and candidly speaking, may an administration truly founded on integrity and change, really decided on being pro-people, have a right and just alternative in responding to the above questions?

THE JUSTICE SYSTEM IN THE PHILIPPINES

HERE is an interesting thesis that those in the Executive Department of the present administration might want to seriously consider and thereafter decidedly act upon. This proposed agendum can neither be irrelevant nor vain—considering that this country is at the bottom of developmental possibilities in Asia, and that millions of its people have to leave behind their dear families, only to earn a living abroad.

In other words, mention any political errancy or any social malady in the Philippines, say any public misery or economic malediction of the Filipinos as a people, and at the bottom thereof is readily found a dysfunctional justice system as its fundamental causal origin. So too, think of really big time crooks freely roaming around and enjoying their decadent lives, remember infamous professional thieves proudly displaying their stinking stolen wealth and throwing their sordid weight around, bring to mind high ranking politicians infamous for their heinous graft and corrupt practices yet still manage to command the adulation of certain people—and you find systemic injustice in the country as their common premise.

This is in no way over-stating the inherent deadly significance and consequent fatal implications of injustice in society vis-à-vis the good fortune and the precious blessings brought about by social justice. Come to think of it, it is morally impossible to find anything really good or truly right when injustice is an element thereof. Thus: Unjust honesty or truthfulness. Unjust generosity or benevolence. Unjust integrity or probity. None of these make sense. On the other hand, everything that is objectively good and realistically right, cannot but incorporate justice as a constituent factor thereof. Thus: Just worth or merit. Just profitability or liberality. Just advantage or win.

Conclusion: In the event that the new administration—swamped by so many propositions, suggestions, inclusive of innumerable unsolicited pieces of advice—is unconditionally committed to its battle cry of principled policies and upright governance, it stands to reason that its over-all national plan of action cannot but have as its cornerstone and priority mission, none other than a consistent, serious and operative Justice System all over the country. And the rest of what is basically good, right and fair for the Philippines and the Filipinos, simply follow as a matter of course.

Thus: Away with untouchables! Away with those above the law! Away with justice only for the poor, the ignorant, the little people. Justice for all or none at all!

jueteng metamorphosis

STRANGE but true! The jueteng curse in this otherwise country of basic peace and ease is not only the incarnation of gross deceit and brazen dishonesty, not simply like a cat with nine lives because it has more. It also, time and again, undergoes a metamorphosis of one kind or another—when certain influential and no-nonsense public authorities go after its Lords and Queens, the latter’s pawns and jokers. These individuals are much more than any professional politico with their respective dynasties.

Yet, it is not really that difficult to get these enemies of Philippine society. Reasons: there is the categorical anti-jueteng law. There are thousands of policemen—not to mention the thousand more with the authority to stop the deceptive and illegal numbers’ game. Every Pedro, Juan and Simon know who are the jueteng Lords and Queens, where they operate and live, what places they frequent, who are the shady characters they deal with. But unless there are public officials adorned with unquestionable integrity and moral authority, and who will decidedly get them and place them behind bars, blessed are the Juetengerous and damned be their millions of victims all over the country.

A known and respected Senator already said “Lubao, Pampanga, is the Vatican of Jueteng!”—or something the like. And who really does not know this—if not only people from Mars or from the Moon! Be it true or false, it is said that the illustrious Jueteng circle is now even more compact and powerful for its new distinct and famous member and illustrious patron. In other words, the new administration must have its hands full in doing away with the manipulative and corruptive numbers’ game of Jueteng by getting rid their capitalists and sponsors from the national to the local levels of government.

The members of the inner circle of the Jueteng Kingdom are only as powerful and influential as long as their sumptuous SOPs to decadent public officials and public authorities are sufficient, acceptable and regular. But lest those now trustworthy and dependable public officials and public authorities be unwary, know they should that Jueteng can be “gone” or “done away with”—only to metamorphose into “Loteng”, “STL”, “Virtual” or whatever. But just the same, in the event that the new administration truly wants to get rid of Jueteng and its in-breeding, all it needs is the decision and resolve to do so. No more. No less.

In with anti-Jueteng individuals! Away with pro-Jueteng characters!
