Criminal Industry

Dissenters are unceremoniously murdered, independently of what the law provides. Mere suspects are immediately eliminated against all dictates of even elementary decency. Not only is human life considered cheap for the helpless, but human dignity is only revered in favor of the powerful, while human rights are recognized merely among the rich and wherefore influential.

The Country has fast become the haven of illegal drug trade. There are both big and small drug lords in practically all the regions of the Philippines. The drug peddlers have become certainly more – not only in number but also in their respective districts of operation. This is not even making mention of the drug markets (“tiangge”) here and there that refuse to fold up. Meantime, dangerous drug addicts are found among all sectors of society, among all age brackets of the population. Their innocent victims as well infallibly become more not only in number but also in gravity.

Kidnappings and carnappings go on as a matter of fact. Bank robberies are not rare events, while snatching of even teller machines already takes place. Hold-ups in the streets, in jeeps and buses are no more news. Houses are either calmly or forcibly entered into the robbed to the burglars’ delight. So called “impregnable” buildings ultimately prove vulnerable specially to insiders. To lose things here and there is the rule, but to have things returned to their rightful owner – this is truly a rare exception.

Women are violated. Boys and girls are damaged. While rapists and pedophiles are usually strangers, women, the truth is boys and girls at times are not safe even among their elders, and even in their homes. Meantime, these dangerous and at times even serial sex offenders whose rapacious existence continuous to thrive for one reason or another, are certainly not only local in origin but also, and more shamefully so, foreigners allowed not only to enter but also to stay in the Country.

Needless to say, there is already a growing criminal industry in the Islands. The criminals appear to be all over the land, and crimes seem to be the order of every day. The conclusions seem to be obvious: First: The Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the land signs a good number of anti-criminal bills in general, shouts many anti-criminal orders and even proudly assumes this and that anti-criminal title. Conclusion: The criminal industry is one big living and thriving reality. Second: The police authorities, the intelligence officers plus this and that law and order agency are becoming more in number, knowledge and training, and assigned also to ore and more places. Conclusion: Something must be basically wrong in the law and order manpower and operation. Third, many criminals are caught yet many too go free and happy. Conclusion: The Country must have a great dysfunctional justice system.

Meantime, the citizens have to rely on their own anti-criminal means and recourses. The people have to defend their own selves, homes and resources. The parents have to protect their own sons and daughters. Until when? Until a better Chief Law Enforcement Officer comes to fore!

new national religion

Listen to people, tune in to radio stations, read the daily papers – and you come to realize slowly but surely that a New National Religion has progressively developed in this Country. You hear it spoken about in the marketplace. You notice it discussed in public and private offices. You become aware of it when not only the adult but also the young talk about it. In other words, there has come to fore surreptitiously, a New National Religion in the Philippines – courtesy specially of the majority of public officials particularly so in this present some nine-year-old government. The truth is that the higher in ranking these individuals are in the government hierarchy, the more effective they are in propagating this new creed which they subscribe with pride and delight.

There was a time when the tenets and practices of this new national belief were but said and done with certain secrecy and some shame even. Its followers were then few and far between. Its propagators preached and taught its new tenets in but whispers, shadowy places and little corners. Today however, their discretion and prudence – so to speak - have been progressively changed to recklessness and extravagance. In other words, the incumbent authorities, the official subordinates and constituent followers of this. New National Religion, proudly subscribes and openly promotes its doctrinal posits and faithful observances. In effect, not few people in business and industry, in the professions and the academe included, have began to be converts to this new national faith in the Philippines.

To be more concrete and clear, it is but fitting to hereunder expressly and categorically commit into writing the official Ten Mandates of this New National Religion – even if only to formally alert and update the general public about its operative existence in the Country:

1st. Thou shall engage in graft and corruption as much as thou can.
2nd. Thou shall worship wealth and power.
3rd. Thou shall steal, cheat and lie.
4th. Thou shall use bombs, grenades and guns for which they are made.
5th. Thou shall not mind human lives, human dignity and human rights.
6th. Thou shall kill, butcher or waste individuals when convenient.
7th Thou shall use and abuse the poor and helpless for thy own good.
8th. Thou shall not bother about the rule of law as thou are above it.
9th. Thou shall commit adultery as often as it pleases thee.
10th. Thou shall remain callous and shameless.

The truth is that the New National Religion with its superb tempting and enticing ten fundamental imperatives has taken deep roots particularly during this almost decade old government amorality and nonchalance – specially so on account of its enduring demonstration of calm and cool in the face of strong public dissent, distrust and disgust. All truly decent, honorable and upright Filipinos will have to wait for some time for this New National Religion to eventually fold up upon the coming specially of a morally healthier and ethically better national government. Amen.

state of the national administration

Now it can be said loud and clear. After no less than nine SONA delivered with the usual pomp and pageantry by the Palace occupant, it is rather evident that the total glorious and heavenly picture of the state of the nation thus beautifully painted with impressive bold strokes plus unexpected details, does not in fact say nor show the pitiful and lamentable Philippine reality on the ground. In other words, surrounded by palatial ambiance, having continuous adulating if not adoring company, wallowing in cloud 9 thoughts and wherefore breathing clean air, it becomes quite understandable that the same Malacanang nine-year-long inhabitant displayed jewelries, wore exquisite clothe and spoke nice sounding words about—all of which however were so far and detached from the dirty realities and dire facts which many deprived people have been living with and patiently bearing.

Such a phenomenon well explains the two following simultaneous yet much contrasting events during the recently held SONA – something which the previous one-to-many SONA delivered before already showed: On one hand, there were the overwhelming loud cheers and long applauses with the well cleaned, much flowered and duly perfumed Hall of Congress. On the other hand, there were the wet and hungry, shouting and angry people outside of Congress, bringing insulting placards and denouncing flags, bearing the cold rains and trying hard to burn horrible looking effigies of precisely the one claiming with much pride and certainty, that the local economy was great, that the Country was much blessed, and that the people should wherefore rejoice and be grateful for.

Just for the record, if it is true that the local economy is so good and promising, if the Country enjoys development and abundance, how does the palace by the sky explain the following well known on the ground hard-hitting facts: The continuous and even surreptitious exit of Filipinos simply to find work abroad, all dangers thereto appended notwithstanding? The proliferation of beggars in the City streets, the avid searches of anything edible , usable or sellable from garbage dumps. The families living under bridges, in push carts and in the streets. The very long cues for little rice, for medical services, for anything free. This is not to mention the lower and lower and lower regard for the national leadership.

The State of the National Administration (SONA) is jarred by its high self-regard vis-à-vis the downright misery of the general public, undermined by its ubiquitous corruption and callous deceit productive of the poverty and misery of the people. Worse, with so much taxes collected from the new born babies to the helpless elderly plus so big local and foreign debts obtained such that the yet unborn Filipino is already deeply indebted. This is unconscionable – to say the least.

Meantime, the times ahead are anything but certain and comforting. It has come to a point that the following dreadful words are already openly said here and there, heard every now and then: “Term Extension”, “Revolution”, “Martial Law” and similar questionable expressions.
