“Scheming.” “Designing.” “Cunning.” “Devious.” “Treacherous.” These are some of the word-equivalents of the insatiable and wherefore detestable greed for power as verified in the so called “Machiavellian Syndrome”. Voracious and rapacious of might and influence, ravenous and implacable in the tenure of authority and prestige – such description very well for someone with dictatorial personality traits, with self-serving authoritarian tendency. Everybody is dispensable. Everything is disposable. The continuous tenure of power and might is the be all and end all of all agenda – primary design, pursuant plan and concrete programs – which are over and above anybody and anything else.
Dictator, tyrants and despots are all in possession of the Syndrome, They think the world turns around them. They see themselves as indispensable in the life of a people, in the history of a Country. Worst of all, while actually in the state of delusion, they feel consumed of love for and service to others – although feeding on their lives, demolishing their dignity and violating their rights. Thus it is that they think they are special creations of divinity, having a special claim to divine intervention and wherefore exacting special subservience of everybody else – under penalty of extrajudicial killing, forced disappearance and other atrocities.
The Syndrome brings to fore essentially the common pitiful realities, viz., one and the same sick psychopathological constitution having inherently the same sickening composite socio-political situation as follow: Strong popular resentment plus pervasive fervent dissent on account of people’s exploitation and victimization. The Syndrome becomes even more pronounced the more weak, fearful and poor people there are to subjugate and trample upon. History is the witness that these marginalized people feed the Syndrome as gasoline so well and so much feeds the fire.
Machiavellian characters deliberately and decidedly forget certain objective realities precisely because these are true and disconcerting: That everything temporal has an eventual end. That all human reigns have their ultimate conclusions. That even Machiavelli was overtaken by death, was buried and underwent unstoppable decay. All his pretenders thus infallibly have the exactly same fate, the specifically same destiny. They not only fade away but become the subject exemplars for profound rebuke, emerged as symbols of popular disgust.
The Filipinos are certainly neither ignorant of nor numb to certain personalities in their history who rose to power through deception, who kept power through corruption, and who wanted to continue wielding power through manipulation. But as certain as the sun goes down and the night thereafter reigns, Pinoys are very aware and knowledgeable that the past had, the present has and the future will have the same verdict for Machiavelli reincarnations in their dear Country: Away with them! Away they ultimately are! And away they remain.
Graft and corruption. Money power. Electoral manipulation. Dysfunctional justice system. Cha-Cha. Bomb scare. Gun rule. August moon. All these and other atrocities sound very familiar!

poor charter
“The system clearly needs fundamental change, and the sooner the better. It’s time to start the great debate on Charter Change. I shall work with Congress, civil society groups and local government executives who are convinced that Charter changes are needed to enable the country to surmount the unprecedented challenge of the 21st century.” (SONA 2005)
Poor Charter! When the Country abounds with supposedly public servants from the national to the local levels of government, but who in fact elected themselves by well paid notorious minions, not to mention the employ of goons and the hiring of guns, whose basic fault is it? When the Philippines has much more than enough unfit and incompetent public officials, what is the fundamental cause? Answer: The Charter!
Poor Charter! When the Land is more often than not, identified with graft and corrupt practices unlimited in all branches of government specially so in the Executive Department, what should be definitely blamed? When the public coffer is continuously raided by shameless government officials, when public funds are unceremoniously pocketed, where is the radical culpability? Answer: The Charter!
Poor Charter! When the Philippines from a developing Country has progressively emerged into an undeveloped one particularly in the last decade, notwithstanding the much proclaimed glorious vision of “Super-Regions”, what has been the big impediment all along? When millions of Filipinos have to leave their families behind in order to make them live, where lies the guilt? Answer: The Charter!
Poor Charter! When the Country is not only beset with poverty and want, deficient in education and health care, wanting in food and housing, what is really wrong? When sickness in common but medicine is costly, when basic commodities cost so much and money in people’s pockets is so little, where should rebuked be squarely reposed? Answer: The Charter!
Poor Charter! When there is so much injustice in Philippine society with the poor and helpless ones as predictable and constant victims, and with the rich and powerful as devious personalities above the law, what should be censured? When there is bitter resentment and profound dissent due to violation of human rights and on account of extrajudicial killings, what should be changed? Answer: The Charter!
Poor Philippine Constitution! It is never right but instead always wrong! When things are going well, the reigning government takes all the credit and seeks all the applause. But when the going gets tough, the tough goes flying abroad and the Constitution is the culprit. With Charter Change, the government will be a holy institution, public officials will be saints! Change the Charter and the Philippines will be paradise, the Filipinos will be blessed, happy and have permanent smiles on their faces.

just thinking
Time and again, without any malice meant nor any offense intended, there are questions raised here and there, every now and then, to the effect: Why not the FG as a “Presidentiable” for 2010? While certain eyebrows may be raised by such a thought, the idea is not without its practical merit before the forum of law as there is no legal impediment – constitutional or otherwise – to such a venture. And in the sphere of partisan politics, the same insight has all conceivable merits – for many practical reasons:
One: Malacanang and its political allies seem to be at a lost whom to field as their presidential candidate for 2010, who will not only be “winnable” but also assure them of his fidelity and pursuant attention thereto.
Two: Even such the highest national public office, campaign funds will be more than enough from many sources, be these local, provincial and/or regional in scope and potentials.
Three: The political machinery in all levels of the spectrum is well in place from the national down to the barangay plane, all ready and willing to walk the talk, to assume and do the assiduous campaign work.
Four: The Candidate already knows what a President means, what the Office usually does, who are regularly met and called, how the Office holder lives and what living in Malacanang entails.
Five: There is the assurance that political authority is kept within the family circle, specially so in terms of promoting its concerns and defending it from any possible accusations of many kinds after 2010.
Six: It is not exactly unheard or much less unrealized that members and/or close relatives of one and the same family, take the place of one after the other in the same political Office, one election after another.
Seven: Philippine politics as of now lived and practiced, ordinarily has no room for superfluous decorum outmoded delicacy or over-sensitive propriety, under eventual penalty of lost opportunities and consequent repentance.
One thing is certain, i.e., those thus thinking should approach the private person concerned even if only to know whether their thoughts as above expressed, have any hope at all of being a reality, if their ideas have any merit of being duly considered. There is nothing like sincerity and candor in this particular matter which is thus presented with no ill-will towards none, and specially so with but honest and good thoughts towards all concerned in this distinct political possibility. As above said: “Just thinking.”
