”Public office is a public trust. Public officials and employees must at all times be accountable to the people, serve them with outmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, efficiency, act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.” (Philippine Constitution, Art XI, Section I )
Knowing the ruling government in terms of the luxurious life and exceptional profitable miracles of its numerous public officials from its national to the local levels, aware of the unending graft and corrupt practices of the big majority of these self-exalted characters who have become big experts raiding the public funds and incurring debts from every local and foreign sources, it is not simply surprising and shocking but also disgusting and sickening to read and to know the above normative provision adopted by nothing less than the Fundamental Law of the Land.
Hereunder are but some five of the more contradictory and wherefore much nauseating facts that convincingly make the above cited constitutional norm a great fiction of imagination, a big dream in cloud nine, a hallucinatory wishful thinking – courtesy of a big majority of the present crop of the so called “ Public Servants” in the present government:
Public suspicion: This almost immediate suspicion instead – not trust – is what in effect comes to the mind of the general public as a matter of fact, upon they face and deal with government officials.
Personal Immunity: The standing truth is that the higher the public official stands in the government hierarchy, the more this remains above the law and the reach of accountability.
Inherent duplicity: It is a veritable impossibility to find integrity in all or even majority of the public officials in this government who seem to be resolved in following their leaders as a perceived incarnate deceit.
Addictive Materialism: Patriotism for public officials? What is that all about? What is the more advantageous actuation for most of them is in effect centered in the quest for favors and wealth. Is that a secret?
Luxurious Living: Name names of high ranking public officials in this government who are living modest lives, and you find a rare gem, a big treasure, and wherefore rightfully deserve a big medal for the discovery.
The truth and reality of the matter is that all public officials are no more than employees of the people who through their direct and indirect taxes, pay their salaries and benefits. Hence, the phrase “Servants of the People”.
